All Aboard, The Train!
Hope Arce- Reed
In the early 1800’s there were only few ways of transportation. People had lots of errands / places that they needed to take care of in a timely fashion. Without the invention of the train it was difficult for them to complete them in that convenient time. When the first train was invented it allowed people to have another choice for transporting and taking people and their goods to one place from another. The train was a very important innovation to the economy of the United States. Some of the models of the train could perform many tasks that people could not do without it. When the first one was invented it was mainly used to transport mail, baggage, ( US History ) and people which made it easier for people to work and travel to and from places. Life was made easier with the development of trains in the 1800’s.
In 1852 the first railroad car was created. The railroad was a big difference to the economy because it could transport passengers, baggage, and mail ( Northwest History Express ). Lots of people used the railcar because it was fast and easy to use daily. The fare to ride the train only cost 10 ¢ to 28 ¢ ( Northwest HIstory Express ) which was pretty affordable for people that did not really work as much as others or have a lot of money. Trains were also commonly used because early cars were not introduced yet. The railroad brought a new world to people so it was faster and easier for them to do work.
The development of the railroads had brought such an intense ( social, economic, and political ) change to the country ( Early American Railroads ). Since railroads were invented, that meant that other things for easy transportation needed to be invented so that the train could function correctly. In order for the train to work people needed to build bridges, and train depots. It created a domino effect with the other things; in order for the train to work, the bridge and the train depots needed to be created, so everything could run together. The invention of the train brought new and improved ideas to the table for other inventions to be made. George Stephenson successfully built and designed the locomotive ( very different from the train; the motor for the train; pulls the train ) which was very helpful to Richard Trevithick ( the inventor of the train ). The locomotive was helpful to Trevithick because without it the train would never function correctly.
There were many train that were invented but “the greatest feat of 19th century” ( US History ) was the transcontinental railroad. This railroad was important and successful because it brought huge forces of immigrants ( US History ). This brought in the future more jobs to the United States and more diversity of people from other countries. The Industrial Revolution was a period of time that there was a lot of transition of making things on a large scale with the new introduced machinery in the business owner’s work. The train was a great way of taking goods from homes, factories, and places of work. It was easy to move finished goods over long distances. The first transcontinental railroad traveled through Utah, Sacramento, Omaha, Nebraska and Iowa shipping goods from companies ( American Historama ). Since it was so easy people became happier with a company and continued to buy from the company, which can lead to growth in business and in transportation of manufactured goods.
The first railroad in the United States was actually built in Boston of 1807 as the first train was built in 1804 ( US History ). It was used to carry soil from a top of a hill to the Boston Harbor ( American Historama ). People believed that the idea was so useful and efficient to themselves that they could use it to transport other items besides for the fact of building and construction like dirt and wood to transport to the bay.
Trains were also a type of communication. Since the first phone was not introduced into the 1900’s, the train was a source of communicating messages from people. Other forms of communication such as writing tools ( pens, pencils, paper, newspaper, and storytelling ) ( Northwest History Express ) were used to communicate messages but the train is a better way of traveling these messages because it was quicker and simpler. On the side of the railroad there would be a tall hook with a bag of mail connected to it, when the train would pass by another hook connected to the train would open up and grab the bag of mail as the train car passed by and the mail would be collected and people would soon receive the mail someone sent to them.
Even though the train was extremely impressive it did have some flaws. Since the cars were secured together with wheels, as the train would stop there was a horrible clanging and bumping noises (American Historama). When the train would go under a tunnel; the smoke pipe had a technology so it could be let down. The passengers did not feel comfortable on the train because all of the smoke and ashes would get in the passengers faces and accumulate on the bags of the passengers.
There are also many goods things about the train. Trains cut 90 % if travel time which made customers happy (American Historama). The railroad in general helped transportation across the world. Many immigrants and settlers moved to the West in the 1800’s. New cities and towns were created along the routes of the railways which brought more settlers and immigrants, which makes the United States a little more diverse.
In conclusion, trains for the most part where very useful, helpful, and beneficial and still are to this day, besides some minor details and problems with the machine. People use the invention for many reasons and it was profitable to everyone that was involved or had anything to do anything with the machine. It helped people to get their mail faster, get places faster, and receive goods faster, and do their personal things faster than they could do without it. The creation of the train has made a big difference to the United States and other countries.
