In the 1800s how did people get from one place to another? They used horses, buggies, if they were close to water they could take a boat, they could take a train, or walk. Cars were invented in the late 1800s. There were many types of cars, one was the electric car. Electric cars worked but they weren't very efficient. Many people dreamed about a car so they did not have to walk or take horse buggies all the time. Even though electric cars back then were slow they did move and that was better than a walking all day.
The first electric car was made by William Morrison in 1891. “They could only travel 50 miles on one charged battery” (Transportation in the 1800s). Over the years as people worked on cars they evolved and for the better, but people took advantage of cars. In the 1800s people used the cars to transport alcohol to many places people used it to take away their feelings or their whole day. People used their cars so much to transport alcohol so much that religious people and other started a protest that people shouldn't drink anymore eventually that lead to making a new amendment, which is the 19 amendment.
This invention also helped people because it is very useful. It can take people where they want to go and help them deliver things so they don’t have to carry it or put it on the back of a horse. When the car was invented the world changed drastically, everyone wanted one. Once they officially knew how to make them they started selling. When the first cars were invented they didn't have the seat belt. The seat belt was invented sometime in the 1900s but it was required in 1958.
“Leonardo da Vinci designed a steerable wooden, clockwork-driven three-wheel cart in the
late 15th century. The word automobile was apparently first used in the same period, by the Italian artist and engineer Francesco di Giorgio Martini, who applied it to a steerable, four-wheel, human-powered vehicle he designed.” (Automobile Industry) Many people have designed cars or actually made an invention of it because everyone wanted something new and independent that they could own and use whenever they wanted. Over the years they kept on upgrading and it became more successful everyday.
When they are building the cars if takes a long time because they have to gather all the parts see where they go and if it doesn’t work they have to find out what they did wrong. Today if something was wrong with our cars we could just take them to a shop, wait a few hours then it’s done. They did not have it that easy back then, they have to do it themselves mostly because cars were basically just starting out and most people did not know how to fix them. “Product planners establish basic design goals such as size, weight, and potential market.” (Automobile Industry) This is important because it tells you what they needed to do in order to make a good efficient car.
“Charles and Frank Duryea of Illinois developed the first American gas-powered car in 1893.” (Transportation in the 1800s). “While Karl Benz the invented the first practical modern automobile, his car was practical used a gasoline-powered internal-combustion engine.” (Who Invented the Car?) What Karl Benz and Charles and Frank Duryea built it much like the cars we use today. We use gasoline to keep our cars going and if it runs out we have gas stations to refill our cars.
When the streetcars came to life a lot of people got on because it was basically like a big bus except they didn’t call it that in the 1800s. So there was a lot of public transportation, they could use a train but that takes you a long way and drops you off at a station while the streetcar/bus takes you a exactly where you want to go. Streetcars and trolleys are very alike, they
both look like buses and they transport people.
When the independent or private cars came out people wanted them the most so they bought them but streetcars, trolleys, etc went bankrupt. When they tried to restore the streetcars they came up with the “Electric Railway President’s Conference Committee (PCC) of the so-called PCC car. Most cities, however, preferred the gasoline- and diesel-powered bus, because it allowed flexibility in route selection and eliminated the need for overhead wires.” (Public Transportation)
Transportation in the 1800s was rough but ultimately it got better and better. People/Inventors put their heads to use and created very useful and great things. We use many things that people/inventors created back in the day. It was hard because they don’t have as much resources as we do, example: gas station. They did not have a gas station. Many people invented things in the century of 1800s, like light bulbs, arc lamp, battery, photograph, microphone, type writer, refrigerator, morse code, and much more. We most of these things today and we most definitely use cars today it is very important to our present and future.
