The story of the horse carriages in America is just part of the saga of people constantly on the move. People had trouble getting their goods and transporting themselves from one place to another. Men, women and children would walk by foot and ride on horse because stables were all over town. Soon, there was a bright idea that a carriage will hold more individuals and can be convenient for families.
Horse buggies started to become popular in remote areas and villages. Why? People had jobs and places to get to. These carriages were good for trading and carrying goods, travel vacations and just getting around in a faster way. These buggies were getting more popular and started to become improved, designing the carriages and adding new features, made a better ride.
The wooden wheel was a big impact on the horse carriage. The first wooden wheel was used in 1863, it was a circular block of wood with a small circular block of wood in the center; this wheel started the idea of moving transportation. However, this particular wheel was not the best for a carriage; the solid block was wobbly and hard to control. As years progressed, this wheel was transformed.
The American wheel was a bigger complete circle with multiple spokes. This wheel was a better build for a carriage because it was stronger and had a less wobble to the ride. The circle of the wheel was doubled with wood so it could carry more than one person. After the American wheel, the idea of a carriage was then brought forth. Hickory wood was used to build the American wheel. Hickory wood is the hardest wood grown in North America; it is the best wood because it won’t split quickly. On the other hand, Oak and Ash wood was also a source when building the wheel.
The earliest record of a carriage was called a chariot; it carried one to two people and was sturdy. This was mostly used in the years of 3000 B.C.E. used for Egyptian welfare. Therefore, this invention was useful in war; it got soldiers to areas needed in a swift way. However, Carriages were liberal and continued to grow; they grew up to the 1800s and improved. Chariots were of good use in this time because walking by foot was a lot of work and delayed destination travel.
In communities of the 1800s, there would be a stable filled with many different grown horses. There would be somebody to take care of the stable. When someone wanted to take just a horse, or horse-drawn carriage, they had to pay a fee and then return it within a nine-hour period of twenty-four hours. There was a 5℄ fee for horses and a 10℄ fee for horse carriages. The stable-worker fed and cleaned the horses. Horses also get rid of waste, so the worker had to scoop up their poop and take it away. What about in the streets? There was also assigned workers to make sure the streets were clean from pooping horses. Imagine having that job!
The Horse carriage idea was a good reliable resource at the time. They got around town with no problem, but this invention has pluses and minuses. Most horses were over-worked, and some were abusing the animal. People acted viciously to the animal knowing that it was helpless and couldn’t defend it. Gradually, many ones didn’t like the misuse of a good resource. Their voices weren’t really heard back then, since the horse was such a good help. But, now in today’s time, these horses are getting hurt and even worse, killed. Carriages are being put on the traffic roads, the same roads as cars and trucks.
According to a study in 2001 from Texas, New York City especially is one of the top 75 traffic congested cities in The United States. Yes, Horse Buggies were being used in this heavily populated area. Pedestrians, taxis, cars, trucks, emergency vehicles, buses, and bikes mixed with horse is a recipe for disaster. Cars and other vehicles can be repaired and fixed in no time. Horse and other animals, can be repaired or fixed. Some animals are easily killed by just a simple tap of a car. (banhdc)
Horses are not in there right place. Being on the same congested streets as cars can be dangerous, not only to the horse but to the individuals in the horse transportation. Horses are easily spooked. It is their nature to get scared and bolt. Accidents have happened and have been very serious. Carriages were flipped and horses have been injured.
June 5, 2013 - A horse was spooked and ran towards traffic. One of the horse’s straps broke and he was trapped under his carriage. When he tried to free himself, his leg was cut very badly.
July 4, 2007 - A horse was frightened by and usually noise and bolted. A taxi collided with this horse and almost killed the horse and himself. The horse rear legs were torn and split in some parts. The taxi driver was hospitalized. (Banhdc)
June 10, 2014 - A horse named Pumpkin was spooked from a usual emergency siren and ran full speed. Pumpkin went through a light and smashed into a taxi door. When the horse hit the door, the driver was injured. (Banhdc)
These incidents may seem small and harmless but when citizens and animals are getting injured it is no longer fun. This is why horses belong in parks not on congested traffic areas.
Many organizations are trying to “ban” horse buggies. They have come up with issues that can ban this business. Many cities have banned horse transportation because of the accidents and misuse of the animal. Cities such as: Palm Beach, Nevada, Las Vegas, Treasure Island, Pompano Beach, and even London, Oxford. Organizations are trying to get rid of horse drawn carriages because they see the good results but also the bad. They see that this “fun” ride is not fun to the horses and their being harmed. They have noticed the difference in the horse from when their fresh and healthy. When they get sold into transportation slavery then they have defects such as arthritis, tooth decay from mouth guards, cracked hoofs, bruises and many injuries and much more.
Horse drawn carriages are just part of the human invention cycle. They are good and okay in some ways. Horse transportation can be fun in a park. We should keep the goal of keeping them safe and fun at the same time. Situations of Injured Horse, Horse Accidents, Health of the animal, and even of individuals around the source of transportation are not the right way to treat a good resource of transportation.
